You can upgrade a ZXTM appliance from version 4.0 by reinstalling it, using the backup feature to preserve your configuration. This involves 10 to 20 minutes of downtime for an individual appliance, or a few seconds for a cluster. Once you have upgraded, future upgrades will not require a reinstall.
Note: If you are upgrading from ZXTM 4.1 or later you should use these instructions instead.
Upgrading an individual (non-clustered) appliance
Before upgrading, make sure you have the following things stored somewhere other than on the appliance:
a backup of your configuration. You can either use Services → Config Summary → Export or export an existing backup at System → Backups.
a note of the appliance's networking and SNMP configurations (backups do not currently include these).
your new license file for ZXTM 4.1. You will need to provide this before you can restore a backup or manage any traffic.
for ZXTM 2000 appliances, a USB CD drive (these appliances do not have an internal CD drive). Owners of ZXTM 2000 appliances will also need to enable SATA in their BIOS settings before running the installation CD.
Download the ZXTM 4.1 Base package from customer.zeus.com and write it to a CD.
Reboot the appliance with this CD in the drive. On the local console, you will be prompted to type "yes" to wipe all data and upgrade. The installation will then run unattended until the appliance ejects the CD and is ready to shut down.
Switch the appliance back on. It will boot into ZXTM 4.1 and the local console will tell you the web address you should visit to finish configuration. This will either be an address obtained from a DHCP server or, failing that, a private network address (192.168.1.101).
At that address, you will be able to upload your license file and set the network configuration and other initial settings. The full web interface will then become available, allowing you to upload and restore your backup at System → Backups. Note that any other settings changed before doing so will not be preserved. Your appliance and its services will then be up and running again.
Upgrading a cluster
If you have a cluster, your Traffic IPs only need to be down for a few seconds. To achieve this:
Follow the instructions above for each appliance, until only one appliance in the Traffic IP Group has not been upgraded. At this point, this non-upgraded appliance will be hosting all the Traffic IPs (the upgraded appliances will not raise them).
Join the upgraded appliances together into a cluster. They still will not raise the Traffic IPs, because of the missing appliance.
On the non-upgraded appliance, delete the Traffic IP Group. Your few seconds of downtime occur at this point. On the upgraded cluster (via any admin interface), remove the non-upgraded appliance from the Traffic IP Group. The upgraded machines are now hosting the Traffic IPs.
Upgrade the final appliance and join it to the cluster.
